A bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced new legislation on Thursday, June 23rd that would authorize the Biden administration to block the export of U.S. personal data to countries such as China because the practice poses national security risks.
The bill is co-sponsored by Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, aiming to protect the sensitive personal information of Americans from being sold or transferred to high-risk countries.
The introduction of the new bill comes amid the U.S. has heightened scrutiny over the flow of data to China.
Communist China’s companies can bulk purchase sensitive information about the tracks or health records of millions of Americans from data brokers, and then share that information with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) government.
The CCP has faced growing tensions with the United States over issues including the Russian-Ukrainian war. The bill is the U.S. new confrontation with the CCP.
