Taiwan Launches First English Language TV Channel To Increase International Influence

Taiwan launched its first English-language news, lifestyle, and entertainment TV channel in TaiPei on Oct. 3, aiming to have a greater international voice at a time when the CCP, Chinese Communist Party threatens Taiwan. The name of the new TV channel is “TaiwanPlus”, which is backed by the government. It has been operating since last year and is an online streaming platform that has received strong support from President Tsai Ing-wen.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, President Tsai Ing-wen said the channel has already raised Taiwan’s international profile and will help to forge ever closer ties between Taiwan and countries that share core values of freedom and democracy. She said Taiwan’s story should be shared with the world, and it is more important than ever to have such a platform to bring Taiwan further to the international community.

CGTN, the English-language channel of the CCP’s state television, has made a big distortion of facts, claiming that democratic Taiwan is the territory of the Communist China. The CCP has also pressured Taiwan’s international space station to force foreign companies to refer to Taiwan as part of Communist China on their websites, and at the same time the CCP is presenting a growing military threat to Taiwan. Therefore, Taiwan’s Minister of Culture says that Taiwan needs to get its viewpoint out internationally and combat the CCP’s claims about Taiwan.

The TV channel, which currently airs only in Taiwan, may be launched in the United States in the next six months.
