Tencent Announces MapleStory2 Game Is Shutting Down

On August 28, local time, Tencent announced that it will soon officially stop MapleStory 2’s operation in China on November 2nd, 2022, as an agreement between Tencent and the game developer is about to expire. MapleStory 2, an online game developed by South Korean video game company Nexon, started cooperation with Tencent in China in 2017. Tencent’s gaming business revenue surpassed Sony and Apple to become the world’s No. 1. in 2021, according to data from August 22nd. As we all know, Tencent never produces any games on its own, and almost all game segments rely on agents and acquisitions to make profits. In China, many people make a living from just one game offering gaming peripherals, forums, live streams, short videos, and social media services.

The developer of this recently closed MapleStory 2 is from South Korea, and the game developer of PUBG, Tencent’s most profitable game in December 2021, is also from South Korea. Tencent has cut lots of its APP business this year, while employees’ welfare benefits have dropped across the board; without any self-innovation, and as long as the game developers are not available to agents, profits here will be cut. An economic crisis is on the horizon, as is Tencent, and any high-tech industry advocated within Communist China.
