Pompeo Offers to Visit Taiwan With Pelosi

U.S. congressmen call on Pelosi to show power and not give in to the bullying of the Chinese Communist Party. Former U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo tweeted Sunday (July 24) that he would be willing to fly to Taiwan with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Members of Congress are urging Pelosi to complete her visit.

The Financial Times reported on July 19, citing six sources, that Pelosi will head a delegation to Taiwan in August. When asked by the media on July 20 what he thought of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, Biden said, “Well, I think that the military thinks it’s not a good idea right now.” And Pelosi paraphrased the president the next day, saying, “the military was afraid our plane would get shot down.”

Representatives Tom Tiffany (R-Texas) and Scott Perry (R-Texas) penned a letter to Pelosi on July 22, calling on her to rebuke Beijing and President Biden’s rejection and go to Taiwan as scheduled. They asserted that as Speaker of the House, she should “never have to ask a foreign dictatorship or the State Department for permission to talk to America’s friends and allies.”

They also urged her to schedule a vote on Resolution 21, which calls for an end to the “one-China” policy and the normalization of U.S.-Taiwan relations. They noted that President Carter’s recognition of Communist China was predicated on Beijing’s commitment to peacefully resolving its differences with Taiwan. Still, the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) continues to threaten to annex Taiwan by force.
