U.S. Senators Call FTC to Investigate TikTok’s Illegal Data Breach

On July 5th, the chairman of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and top Republicans called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate the social media App TikTok and its parent company ByteDance in Communist China. The reason for this is that the App illegally collected U.S. user data and repeatedly made false statements.

The short-video App TikTok, allowed engineers and executives in Communist China to repeatedly access private data of U.S. users. In response, U.S. senators questioned the veracity of TikTok’s claim to protect user data.

“In consideration of TikTok’s repeated misrepresentations regarding its data security, data handling, and corporate governance practices, we urge you to act swiftly,” the senators wrote in a letter to FTC Chairman Lina Khan. As one piece of evidence, the letter cited a BuzzFeed news report about TikTok leaking internal recordings. The report said ByteDance’s employees in Communist China “at least” had access to U.S. data.

In response, TikTok acknowledged in a letter last Thursday that employees in Communist China had access to TikTok’s U.S. user data.

However, in response to the U.S. senators’ allegations, last month TikTok said it had completed migrating U.S. users’ information to the Oracle’s servers, but was still using data centers in the U.S. and Singapore for backup.

The U.S. national security team ordered the parent company ByteDance to divest from TikTok amid concerns that U.S. user data could be passed to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Government, however, it has been almost two years since the order was issued. Regrettably, the authorities in America have still not taken any effective measures.

This reflets what Miles tried to tell the American people, that infiltration by the Communist regime in the U.S. is very severe.
